The Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD) is the UK’s leading professional body for human resources (HR) and learning and development (L&D).
Recognised globally, CIPD qualifications are highly valued by employers and are often essential for securing HR and L&D roles. Whether you’re starting your HR career or aiming to progress in the people profession, a CIPD qualification will help you stand out in the competitive HR industry and open up doors to new career opportunities.
If you’re thinking about top-level HR training, our guide will walk you through everything you need to know about CIPD qualifications – from the different levels to the career-boosting benefits of this sought-after accreditation.
CIPD qualifications are consistently monitored and adapted to reflect the latest trends and best practices in modern people management. This ensures that what you learn is practical, relevant, and perfectly aligned with the demands of today’s dynamic organisations.
To simplify the route to becoming an HR or L&D professional, CIPD reduced their number of qualifications to just five in 2021. Now, their qualifications offer two straightforward pathways to becoming CIPD-qualified (HR or L&D). These include:
These qualifications directly correspond to the CIPD Profession Map, the internationally recognised benchmark for the people profession, defining the knowledge and behaviours required to advance careers – at every stage – and drive meaningful workplace impact.
By aligning their HR and L&D qualifications with the Profession Map, CIPD safeguards the quality of their gold-standard courses, maintaining the utmost credibility and professionalism worldwide.
Offering five courses with two tailored career routes, CIPD provides options for those aspiring to build careers as either HR or L&D professionals – from entry to senior-level qualifications.
Each CIPD pathway begins with the Level 3 Certificate, however, at Levels 5 and 7 the course content shifts focus to either HR or L&D-specific material, depending on which route you choose. Each CIPD diploma offers a series of core, pathway, and optional units:
While there are no major changes to the structure of CIPD qualifications in 2026, there are important updates regarding the Employment Rights Bill and its phased implementation.
According to CIPD, further updates are scheduled for April 2026, October 2026, and 2027, which will impact HR practice and professional requirements.
However, until then, here's everything else you need to know about CIPD qualifications:

While no exams are required to gain a CIPD qualification, there are written assessments of 3,000+ words for most units you study. Assessment briefs are updated annually in alignment with the CIPD’s Assessment Change Cycle.
We know that failing a CIPD assessment can feel disheartening, but it’s far from the end of the road.
If you fail, your tutor will provide detailed feedback outlining why your work didn’t meet the required standard and allow you to resubmit after making the necessary improvements.
Use this feedback to identify areas for improvement, such as addressing learning outcomes, referencing correctly, or enhancing the structure of your work. Failing one assignment doesn’t mean failing the entire qualification. You can still pass by completing your resubmission and remaining assignments.
There’s no getting away from the fact that qualifications cost money, and the price of a CIPD qualification will vary depending on the course provider and learning method you choose.
However, it's worth noting that CIPD qualifications offer excellent value when weighed against your career prospects, with 73% of our CIPD students confirming they increased their salary after studying a CIPD course.*
Plus, when you study CIPD with us, you can pay for your course with flexible, interest-free monthly payments.
In general, though, here's an overview of how much CIPD qualifications typically cost:

Classroom learning offers a more traditional way to study, where you’ll attend regular sessions at a college or training centre. Led by a tutor and attended by other learners, these classes follow a set timetable until your course is complete.

Online learning has completely changed how people study, making it easier than ever to balance HR training with a busy lifestyle. Instead of attending a classroom in person, you’ll study from the comfort of your own home – or anywhere with an internet connection.
Choosing to study an online CIPD qualification gives you the flexibility to work at your own pace and fit your studies around your existing commitments.
Many people choose CIPD online learning providers for the convenience and affordability, especially when compared to traditional classroom courses.
For those who prefer the flexibility of online study with the interactivity of a traditional classroom, Live Online study (or blended learning) is a great CIPD study option.
Designed for students who want the best of both worlds, Live Online offers virtual classes led by expert tutors.
