Everything You Need to Know About CIPD Qualifications in 2026

The Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD) is the UK’s leading professional body for human resources (HR) and learning and development (L&D).

Recognised globally, CIPD qualifications are highly valued by employers and are often essential for securing HR and L&D roles. Whether you’re starting your HR career or aiming to progress in the people profession, a CIPD qualification will help you stand out in the competitive HR industry and open up doors to new career opportunities.

If you’re thinking about top-level HR training, our guide will walk you through everything you need to know about CIPD qualifications – from the different levels to the career-boosting benefits of this sought-after accreditation.

CIPD Qualifications in 2026

CIPD qualifications are consistently monitored and adapted to reflect the latest trends and best practices in modern people management. This ensures that what you learn is practical, relevant, and perfectly aligned with the demands of today’s dynamic organisations.

To simplify the route to becoming an HR or L&D professional, CIPD reduced their number of qualifications to just five in 2021. Now, their qualifications offer two straightforward pathways to becoming CIPD-qualified (HR or L&D). These include:

These qualifications directly correspond to the CIPD Profession Map, the internationally recognised benchmark for the people profession, defining the knowledge and behaviours required to advance careers – at every stage – and drive meaningful workplace impact.

By aligning their HR and L&D qualifications with the Profession Map, CIPD safeguards the quality of their gold-standard courses, maintaining the utmost credibility and professionalism worldwide.

CIPD Qualifications Explained (With 2025's Previous Updates)

Offering five courses with two tailored career routes, CIPD provides options for those aspiring to build careers as either HR or L&D professionals – from entry to senior-level qualifications.

Each CIPD pathway begins with the Level 3 Certificate, however, at Levels 5 and 7 the course content shifts focus to either HR or L&D-specific material, depending on which route you choose. Each CIPD diploma offers a series of core, pathway, and optional units:

  • Core units are aligned to the standards of the Profession Map
  • Pathway units (previously 'specialist' units) are focused on the specialist knowledge relevant to your chosen CIPD pathway (i.e., HR or L&D)
  • Optional units are chosen from a series of units created to complement your specialist knowledge

CIPD Updates for 2026:

While there are no major changes to the structure of CIPD qualifications in 2026, there are important updates regarding the Employment Rights Bill and its phased implementation.

According to CIPD, further updates are scheduled for April 2026, October 2026, and 2027, which will impact HR practice and professional requirements.

CIPD Assignments (HR and L&D Pathways)

While no exams are required to gain a CIPD qualification, there are written assessments of 3,000+ words for most units you study. Assessment briefs are updated annually in alignment with the CIPD’s Assessment Change Cycle.

2025/2026 CIPD assessment updates:

  • The CIPD Level 3 Foundation Certificate now requires students to conduct a recruitment interview for their final unit of study, instead of a written assignment.

  • The CIPD Level 5 Associate Diploma in L&D now requires students to conduct an in-person training session for the 'Facilitate Structured L&D Activities in Groups' unit. This is also in place of a written unit assignment.

What happens if I fail a CIPD assignment?

We know that failing a CIPD assessment can feel disheartening, but it’s far from the end of the road.

If you fail, your tutor will provide detailed feedback outlining why your work didn’t meet the required standard and allow you to resubmit after making the necessary improvements.

Use this feedback to identify areas for improvement, such as addressing learning outcomes, referencing correctly, or enhancing the structure of your work. Failing one assignment doesn’t mean failing the entire qualification. You can still pass by completing your resubmission and remaining assignments.

How much do CIPD qualifications cost?

There’s no getting away from the fact that qualifications cost money, and the price of a CIPD qualification will vary depending on the course provider and learning method you choose.

How can I study CIPD qualifications?

Whether you're just starting in HR or L&D or looking to advance your career, choosing the right study method for your CIPD qualification is essential.

Here's a breakdown of the main study options available and what to consider:

Classroom Learning

Classroom learning offers a more traditional way to study, where you’ll attend regular sessions at a college or training centre. Led by a tutor and attended by other learners, these classes follow a set timetable until your course is complete.

This method is ideal for those who prefer a more structured approach to learning and enjoy being part of a group.

Why Choose Classroom Learning?

  • Collaborative: Ideal for learners who thrive in a social, interactive environment.
  • Structured schedule: Regular classes can help you stay motivated and on track.
  • In-person tutor support: Great for those who prefer face-to-face feedback and guidance.

What to Keep in Mind

  • Less flexibility: You’ll need to stick to a predetermined schedule and learn at the tutor’s pace, which may not suit your needs.
  • Higher costs: Classroom courses usually have higher fees and additional expenses, including the cost of physical course materials and commuting.
  • Time-consuming: The extra time it takes to travel to and from classes will add more time to your learning commitments.

100% Online Learning (On Demand)

Online learning has completely changed how people study, making it easier than ever to balance HR training with a busy lifestyle. Instead of attending a classroom in person, you’ll study from the comfort of your own home – or anywhere with an internet connection.

Choosing to study an online CIPD qualification gives you the flexibility to work at your own pace and fit your studies around your existing commitments.

Many people choose CIPD online learning providers for the convenience and affordability, especially when compared to traditional classroom courses.

Why Choose Online Learning?

  • Total flexibility: Learn when and where it suits you, making it perfect for shaping around work, family, or other responsibilities.
  • Cost-effective: Online courses tend to be more affordable as course materials are also accessed entirely online. You’ll also save on travel (and snack runs!).
  • Self-paced study: Work through your course at your own speed, ensuring you fully understand each topic before moving on to the next.
  • Expert tutor support: Just like in a classroom, most CIPD providers offer guidance from tutors with just a click of your mouse! Some providers (like us!) even offer unlimited support while you study.

What to Keep in Mind

  • Self-discipline is key: Without set class times, you’ll need to stay motivated and on track.
  • Less collaborative: Since you won't be attending a classroom, it's up to remain engaged and be proactive about networking.

Live Online Learning

For those who prefer the flexibility of online study with the interactivity of a traditional classroom, Live Online study (or blended learning) is a great CIPD study option.

Designed for students who want the best of both worlds, Live Online offers virtual classes led by expert tutors.

Why choose Live Online learning?

  • Scheduled live-streamed workshops: Attend immersive virtual workshops for each unit of study where tutors deliver lessons in real time, just like in a classroom.
  • Interactive experience: Engage in discussions, ask questions, and collaborate with other students through chat and video features.
  • Flexible and accessible: Study from the comfort of your home or on the go, without sacrificing the structure of scheduled classes.
  • Real-time support: Get instant feedback and answers from tutors during live sessions.

What to Keep in Mind

  • Mandatory attendance: While Live Online study offers students added flexibility, the live-streamed CIPD workshops are set in stone. This means your lifestyle needs to suit this style of learning for you to get the most out of it.
  • Self-motivation is key: Even with a set schedule, Live Online learning requires students to study in between workshops.

Do I need to become a CIPD member?

Yes, when you enrol on a CIPD qualification, you'll need to apply to become a CIPD Student Member for the duration of your studies. This cost is typically separate from your overall course cost.

Once you complete your CIPD course, your qualification makes you eligible for CIPD membership, a great way to showcase your skills, credibility and commitment to the people profession.

Here’s how the CIPD levels line up to the CIPD membership grades:

  • Foundation Certificate: Qualifies you for Foundation Membership (CIPD Foundation).
  • Associate Diploma: Qualifies you for Associate Membership (Assoc CIPD).
  • Advanced Diploma: Qualifies you for Associate Membership and allows you to apply for Chartered Membership (MCIPD) – one of the highest industry accolades – once you have the required practical experience.

Plus, CIPD membership comes with an abundance of perks, including access to industry-leading resources, networking opportunities, and professional recognition worldwide.
