A Guide to the CIPD Membership Levels: Foundation, Associate & Chartered

In recent years, the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD) have revamped their HR and L&D training qualifications to better align with the CIPD Profession Map.

This revamp includes changes to the study units involved at CIPD Level 3, 5 and 7, as well as to the CIPD membership grade linked to each qualification. These updates help create clearer progression routes and stronger alignment between study, professional development, and career outcomes.

To make things simple, we’ve created this clear and practical guide to CIPD membership levels, covering everything from Student Membership through to Fellow status.

What does CIPD membership mean?

CIPD membership plays an important role in supporting your HR or L&D career at every stage. Each membership grade reflects your knowledge, experience, and professional capability, allowing you to demonstrate your credibility and commitment to the people profession.

Holding CIPD membership helps you:

  • Show employers your professional standards
  • Strengthen your career prospects
  • Gain recognition within the people profession

Whether you’re new to HR, progressing through your career, or already working at a senior level, there’s a CIPD membership level designed to support your professional journey, offering valuable benefits alongside one of the most respected accreditations in the industry.

The CIPD Membership Levels Explained

The CIPD membership framework is designed to support your progression through the HR industry, with each membership level reflecting your knowledge, experience, and career stage.

Here's what each CIPD membership level means for your career, and how each links to your CIPD qualification.

CIPD Student Membership

When you enrol on any CIPD qualification, you’ll be required to sign up to become a CIPD Student Member

This level of membership gives you access to a wide range of professional resources and support, helping you get the most from your studies and build confidence as you develop your HR or L&D knowledge.

Student membership is designed to support you while you’re learning and preparing for your next career step.

CIPD Foundation Membership

After completing the CIPD Level 3 Certificate in People Practice, you’ll be qualified to progress to CIPD Foundation Membership. As a Foundation Member, you’ll demonstrate:

  • A strong understanding of core HR and L&D practices
  • Insight into key professional behaviours
  • A foundational knowledge of organisational culture and change

This membership level represents your first formal step into the people profession, offering you credibility and confidence as you begin your HR or L&D career.

CIPD Associate Membership (Assoc. CIPD)

The next stage is CIPD Associate Membership, which you'll be eligible for after completing either:

However, you can also complete the experience-based route, which usually requires a written submission to CIPD, or the apprenticeship route.

Whatever you decide, achieving "Assoc. CIPD" status shows that you have a solid grasp of the core behaviours, skills, and functions required in the people profession, including:

  • Ethics
  • Diversity and inclusion
  • Employee wellbeing

Additionally, this membership level encourages you to develop refined specialist expertise as you progress further within your chosen HR or L&D pathway.

CIPD Chartered Membership (Chartered MCIPD)

Once you complete a CIPD Level 7 Diploma (or equivalent), you may be eligible to apply for Chartered Membership (Chartered MCIPD), which is one of the highest forms of professional recognition in HR and L&D.

To achieve Chartered Member status, you’ll also need to demonstrate:

  • At least one year of recent experience (within the last five years)
  • Strategic, operational-level work within the people profession

While not essential for every career path, becoming a CIPD Chartered Member can significantly enhance your professional standing, signalling to employers and peers that you have the expertise and commitment to influence organisational strategy and people development at a senior level.

Similar to the Associate grade, you can also complete the experience-based or apprenticeship route to achieve this membership level.

CIPD Chartered Fellow Membership (Chartered FCIPD)

Chartered Fellow (Chartered FCIPD) is the most prestigious and sought-after CIPD membership level, offering you the support and credibility to properly influence the future of the people profession.

To achieve this status, you’ll typically need:

  • A CIPD Level 7 Diploma (or equivalent)
  • More than one year of experience in a senior HR or L&D role

You may also be able to upgrade to Chartered Fellow via an Upgrade Assessment or the experience-based route.

Since this membership level recognises you as a role model within the people profession, you'll need to show that you can apply your strategic expertise as a leader while creating meaningful organisational change.

How much does CIPD membership cost?

Depending on the time of the year, there are different CIPD membership options available:

  • 1st Jan to 30th June: 6-month membership
  • 1st Jan to 30th June: 18-month membership

To maintain your status and access member benefits, you'll need to pay a recurring member fee in line with your membership cycle.

Typical CIPD Membership Costs

  • CIPD Student Membership: Between £57 - £170
  • CIPD Foundation Membership: Between £96 - £287
  • CIPD Associate Membership (Assoc. CIPD): Between £96 - £287
  • CIPD Chartered Membership (MCIPD): Between £111 - £333
  • CIPD Chartered Fellow (FCIPD): Between £126 - £377

In a nutshell, the total cost of CIPD membership is equal to the cost of:

  1. Achieving membership (via your CIPD qualification or one of the various assessment routes)
  2. The one-off administrative joining fee (£40)
  3. Your recurring membership fee

However, since membership options can vary, it’s always best to check the latest fees directly with CIPD for the most accurate and up-to-date information on fees.

Is CIPD membership worth the cost?

For many HR and L&D professionals, CIPD membership is seen as a valuable long-term investment rather than just an annual expense. This is because CIPD Membership offers you a wide array of valuable tools and resources to support you in your career, including:

  • Digital badges and certificates
  • Employment law resources
  • CIPD member specialist helplines
  • Award-winning industry magazines
  • EBSCO business journals
  • Access to the CIPD Knowledge archive
  • CIPD mentoring programme
  • CIPD Buddy, a member-exclusive AI tool
