Coaching is a structured, goal-focused process where a coach helps someone improve their own performance by asking questions, encouraging reflection, and guiding them to find their own solutions – rather than giving advice or instructions. It's typically short-term and centred on a specific skill, goal, or challenge.
Mentoring is a longer-term relationship in which a more experienced person shares their knowledge, insight, and experience to support someone else's personal and professional development. Unlike coaching, mentoring often involves giving direct advice and guidance based on the mentor's own career experience.
No. The Level 3 course is designed as an entry point and doesn't require formal coaching or mentoring experience – just a role, or aspiration towards a role, that involves developing others. Level 5 assumes a bit more hands-on management experience but doesn't require a formal qualification to enrol.
A CMI coaching and mentoring qualification prepares you to coach and mentor individuals and teams more effectively, supports career progression into people-development or management roles, and is recognised by employers as evidence of practical, applied skill in developing others.
