5 Ways to Land Your Dream Job: Advice from Recruiters
Last Reviewed: 22 July 2025 - 3 min read
As we enter a new year, it’s the perfect time for a fresh start and to finally figure out how to land that dream job that we know you’ve been thinking about.
The recruitment industry has really taken off these past ten years and these days, recruitment consultants are full to the brim of knowledge, tips and tricks on how to nail your interview, make a lasting impression and to improve the likelihood of being hired.
1) Make a good first impression with top notch interview skills
Job interviews go way back to the 1920's when Thomas Edison created a written test to evaluate the knowledge of candidates. Fast forward to over 100 years later, and interviews have come a long way, evolving even further over the last five years, leaving some of us unsure how to approach them.
Robert Walters Group recommend doing two things:
- Prepare for questions
- Do your research
When it comes to preparing for questions, every job interview is different, what you might face in a sales interview won’t be the same as a finance role. It’s impossible to anticipate every single question, and some may even catch you by surprise.
That said, there are certain questions that frequently come up across industries when employers are screening candidates.
By preparing clear and confident answers to these common questions, you can make a strong impression and stand out from the competition.
Make a strong first impression by coming well-prepared for your interview. Research the company thoroughly, including recent news or press coverage, to demonstrate your professionalism and genuine interest.
Prepare thoughtful questions to ask the interviewer, highlighting the areas that matter most to you.
Preparation is key, but it’s also important to anticipate that not everything may go perfectly.
Being able to stay composed and perform your best despite unexpected challenges shows perseverance, adaptability, and dedication, qualities employers highly value.
By combining thorough preparation with a calm, confident approach, you can leave a lasting positive impression from your very first interview.
If you still feel stuck about how to prepare, keep in mind that there are a number of techniques and formats you can follow that will help you prepare for any interviews.
The STAR method, for example, is recommended by many recruiters, and by Reed, the first recruitment website offered by a recruitment agency in the UK.
2) Keep your CV up to date
Keeping your CV current is more than just a good habit, it’s essential if you want to be ready when exciting opportunities arise.
When you wait until you’re already interviewing, it’s easy to make mistakes: typos slip in, key achievements get forgotten, or you might even realise your references are outdated, all because you rushed.
Recruitment experts recommend updating your CV every quarter (about every three to four months) or when you have either had a performance review or change in responsibilities.
Ask yourself two simple questions:
- Which wins or accomplishments this quarter am I most proud of?
- Has my role changed recently, new tasks, projects, or leadership responsibilities?
Reflecting on these helps you capture recent successes, quantify results, and ensure your CV showcases what you’re doing now, not what you were doing in the past.
Also, double-check that the responsibilities you list match up with roles you’re interested in applying for, it shows recruiters that you’ve already begun doing work that the company you want to work for is doing.
When it comes to updating your CV, don't forget to do the basic admin too, like updating references, tidying up the format and being honest about gaps in your knowledge and experiences.
A well-maintained CV doesn’t just tell employers you’re capable, it demonstrates initiative, attention to detail, and a commitment to your own growth.
3) Create cover letters that provide an impact
Although they can seem like a tedious task on top of submitting your CV, cover letters are important when it comes to standing out and making a lasting impression on potential employers.
Cover letters are there for you to provide the WHY in a comprehensive way that adds value, enabling you to showcase how your skills and abilities fall in line with those on the job description.
Recruitment specialist, Michael Page, states that employers tend to favour CV’s that are accompanied with cover letters and often they are mandatory when applying for roles.
With 40+ years of experience in the recruitment space, Page also states that cover letters are a great way to showcase that you are an unique candidate who is experienced, literate, enthusiastic and valuable in any role.
Case and point: this isn’t something that you want to overlook or exclude from an application.
4) Build your network and use it wisely
Networking remains one of the most powerful ways to open doors, whether that’s building long-term business relationships, learning from like-minded professionals, or landing your next big role.
Referrals, in particular, continue to be a key growth strategy for companies. They not only bring in stronger candidates but also save time and costs, while improving employee retention. And the people who get referred most often? They’re usually the ones who have invested in their network.
LinkedIn is still the world’s largest professional network and an essential tool for both job seekers and recruiters. To make yourself more discoverable, focus on:
- Crafting a strong headline and title that clearly reflects your industry and expertise
- Turning on “Open to Work” so hiring managers know you’re available
- Using industry-specific keywords across your profile to show up in searches
- Updating your location (and relocation preferences) to match where you’re open to opportunities
But simply having a polished LinkedIn profile isn’t enough anymore.
In 2025, visibility comes from active engagement, sharing insights, commenting thoughtfully, and demonstrating expertise through your posts. This not only attracts recruiters but also strengthens your credibility with peers.
Don’t underestimate the value of your existing connections, friends, family, former colleagues, or mentors. Even if they’re not in your exact field, they may know someone who is.
The key is to be intentional:
- Reach out, ask for advice, and learn from others’ experiences
- Offer value in return – share resources, make introductions, or support their work
- Remember that referrals are built on trust, so focus on authentic relationships, not quick wins
In the end, who you know can make all the difference.
So, whether it’s a handshake at an event, a thoughtful message on LinkedIn, or a referral from someone who trusts you – your network could lead you to your next opportunity.
5) Upskill and gain some experience
Upskilling is one of the best ways to show employers that you’re serious about your career. It highlights your commitment to developing new knowledge and skills while proving that you’re willing to put in the effort to achieve your professional goals.
How often you should upskill will depend on your role and its demands, but as a general guide, we recommend investing in some form of upskilling every six to twelve months. This helps you stay competitive, adaptable, and at the top of your game in today’s fast-moving workplace.
Upskilling doesn’t have to mean a major time commitment – it could be an industry-specific qualification, a professional certification, or even a short online course. The key is choosing learning opportunities that align with your career path and the areas where you want to grow.
Landing your dream job: key takeaways from recruiters
Securing your dream job doesn’t happen overnight, it’s about preparation, persistence, and making the right moves at the right time.
Recruiters consistently highlight five essentials: sharpen your interview skills, keep your CV up to date, craft impactful cover letters, build and leverage your network, and commit to regular upskilling.
Each of these steps strengthens your personal brand and positions you as a standout candidate in a competitive job market.
By applying these recruiter-approved strategies, you’ll not only improve your chances of landing interviews but also show potential employers that you’re serious about your professional growth.
Remember, your dream job is out there and with preparation, confidence, and the right approach, you’ll be ready when the opportunity arrives.
