5 Questions to Ask When Choosing a CIPD Provider
Last Reviewed: 06 January 2026 - 3 min read
These days, there seem to be a thousand and one CIPD course providers out there, with most offering tons of perks and professional resources in addition to an exceptional learning experience.
But with so many to choose from, how can you possibly decide on which CIPD provider is best for your HR training? The answer is simple: you ask the right questions.
While the differences between CIPD providers aren't necessarily stark, here are the questions you should be asking before making your decision on who to study with.
1. How long have you been a CIPD provider?
Without a doubt, before you enrol on a CIPD course with any provider, you’ll first want to check in on whether they have a sound reputation to fall back on.
The age of a company is also a good indicator of the quality of service that you’re likely to receive from a CIPD provider. If a company has been in existence for a while, that’s typically a sign that they’ve been doing something right.
This is because, logically, the quality of a company's products and services directly influences whether they'll gain repeat customers, as well as an indication that people are satisfied with the service they’ve received.
A few additional questions you can ask include:
- How long have you been in business?
- How long have you been offering CIPD qualifications?
- What is your overall CIPD pass rate?
At ICS Learn, we’ve been supporting distance learners for over 130 years and delivering online CIPD qualifications for more than 30 years — a history that reflects the quality of our online courses and the support we provide our students.
2. How are your CIPD courses delivered?
CIPD qualifications are offered in a range of formats, so how you choose to study your CIPD course should be motivated by the type of learning method that suits you best.
In the past, most CIPD qualifications were delivered in person; however, over the last decade, there's been an increase in the hybrid and online delivery of CIPD courses, with most people preferring the flexibility they offer.
If you currently work full-time, for instance, you may want to find a provider that offers accessible online CIPD courses that allow you to learn at your own pace. This means you can prioritise what’s most important to you on any given day, and get back to studying when it’s most convenient for you.
In-person and hybrid learning, on the other hand, can sometimes be accompanied by more rigid timetables and start dates, making these options more suitable for those who work part-time or simply prefer guided, face-to-face learning.
Top Tip: Elective CIPD modules tend to vary between providers for CIPD Level 5 and 7, so be sure that the modules you'd like to study are actually an option (especially if you're going for a niche HR or L&D role).
3. How much does a CIPD course cost?
Since no CIPD provider is the same, this is a great question to ask if you’re looking to get the most out of your money while you study. And really, who doesn't want that?
However, what's worth the money for a CIPD qualification will mean different things to different people, depending on what they're looking for in a training provider. For instance, in-person and hybrid learning delivery methods will typically cost more, as you’d be paying for someone else to teach you rather than studying primarily on your own.
That said, there's no denying that online learning tends to be the most affordable option. This is because with online learning, you usually don’t have to worry about the cost of commuting or physical course materials.
Average CIPD Course Costs
- A CIPD Level 3 Foundation Certificate costs between £1,999 and £3000.
- A CIPD Level 5 Associate Diploma (HR or L&D) costs between £3,300 and £4,000.
- A CIPD Level 7 Advanced Diploma (HR or L&D) costs between £6,700 and £7,500.
Some providers also offer interest-free payment plans* (like us!) and low monthly payments for affordability. Because every little bit counts.
Top Tip: Ask about any additional fees you might be required to pay outside of your course costs (e.g., CIPD membership fees), so you don't run into any surprises!
4. What can I expect to learn on a CIPD course?
A CIPD qualification is designed to give you both the practical skills and professional knowledge to succeed in a people-focused role. What you learn will depend on which level you study (and the optional modules you might choose), but all CIPD qualifications focus on applying theory to real workplace scenarios.
However, across any CIPD course, you can expect to gain a strong understanding of human resources and people management, alongside the confidence to support employees and organisations effectively.
Core areas you’ll typically cover include:
- People practice fundamentals: Learn the purpose of HR and L&D, the role of people professionals, and how they support organisational strategy.
- Employment law and ethical practice: Understand key UK employment legislation, employee rights, equality and diversity, and ethical decision-making in the workplace.
- Recruitment, resourcing and talent management: Develop skills in workforce planning, recruitment methods, onboarding, and retaining talent.
- Performance management and employee engagement: Learn how to support performance, manage absence, handle disciplinary issues, and build positive working relationships.
- Learning, development and organisational culture: Explore how training, coaching, and development support both employee growth and business objectives.
- Evidence-based practice: Gain the ability to analyse data, use research, and make informed decisions that add value to organisations.
By the end of your CIPD training, you should feel more confident supporting employees, advising managers, and moving forward in your HR or L&D career.
5. What support can I expect while I study my CIPD qualification?
Embarking on a CIPD qualification can be intimidating, and that’s precisely why we recommend asking your selected providers what type of support you’ll receive during and after you enrol.
Even if you’re a seasoned HR or L&D professional, there may come a point while you’re studying your course where you’ll find that you need a little help with a topic, theory, or skill that you’d like to master.
Luckily, most CIPD providers offer tutor support; however, dig a little deeper to find out more details with additional questions, including
- What relevant HR or L&D experience do your tutors have?
- How will my relationship with my course tutors work?
- When will tutors be available to chat?
- How long does it usually take for tutors to get back to student inquiries?
- Is my tutor support limited?
It's also a good idea to ask what other supporting resources the organisation provides. For example, some providers might offer free career resources, student discounts, or optional workshops.
