CIPD Student Stories: Lamia Abdulhoisin | CIPD Level 3 Certificate

Lamia was previously a teacher, keen to move into the HR Industry. After a recommendation from a friend, she enrolled on the CIPD Level 3 Foundation Certificate in People Practice.

I was a classroom teacher and wanted a change of career and go into HR. As you may know, starting a new career can be scary especially as I did not have previous experience.

I knew I needed qualifications to allow my foot in the door. So, my friend referred me to ICS Learn to start my Level 3 Foundation Course in People Practice. He had spoken so highly of the course; I knew it would work well for me.

I received a discount due to their sale at the time and was able to repay it via monthly direct debit payments which is what I needed.

I was still working as a teacher so online learning course was perfect for me.

Initially, I felt overwhelmed because I hadn’t studied in so long and it was scary to have to study alone with no one physically there to support you. But the ICS Learn website was well organised and the videos were really helped.

Being able to stop and pause the video was helpful too. I loved being independent in my learning and studying in my own pace.

I was able to work through some modules quickly and others if I was busy with work a little slower.

The tutors were readily available, they would take around 24 hours to reply to my questions and were helpful. I know they were also available for calls but I never needed it.

The feedback for any of my submissions were very helpful and clear.

I really liked that you only needed to change any of the ACs that I failed and left everything as it is. Saved a lot of time!

In my experience, the tutors always took around a week after submission to give feedback on my submissions.

I started looking for HR Administration roles while I was studying and having the ‘CIPD Level 3 Foundation Course in People Practice’ on my CV really helped to get noticed, especially since I had no previous experience in the field.

I found a job in a secondary school as HR Administrator and the HR Manager hired me due to my previous school experience and because I was in the process of finishing my course.

I was able to use some of the concepts that I learnt and speak about it in my interview and how I would use my new knowledge and apply it to my work.

Once I finished my course, I was promoted to HR Officer.

I would definitely recommend ICS Learn as it helped me step into my new career while still working. The tutors were very supportive and the website was helpful too.

It does feel daunting but it does get easier once you familiarise yourself with the website. The phone lines are great too, the course advisors are very helpful and they pick up quickly too.
