How to Become a Chartered Manager
Last Reviewed: 16 September 2025 - 3 min read
If you’re aiming to excel in your management or leadership role, advancing your skills is essential. One of the best ways to do this is by gaining professional qualifications through the Chartered Management Institute (CMI) or the Institute of Leadership (ILM).
However, the ultimate recognition of leadership excellence is achieving Chartered Manager status, the highest accolade in management, awarded exclusively by CMI.
What is a Chartered Manager?
A Chartered Manager is officially recognised by the Chartered Management Institute (CMI) for demonstrating outstanding leadership and management skills.
Chartered Managers are responsible for driving the long-term success of people, projects, and operations within their organisations. They set a benchmark for professional excellence by consistently delivering impactful results while upholding high ethical and professional standards.
What is the value of Chartered Manager status?
In today’s competitive UK job market, organisations are looking for leaders who can deliver results, adapt to change, and drive long-term growth.
Gaining Chartered Manager status equips you with the advanced skills and credibility to meet these demands, while proving your commitment to professional excellence and continuous development.
The value of Chartered status extends beyond your personal career, it has a measurable impact on business performance and the wider UK economy.
The benefits include:
- Increased earning potential: managers report an average pay rise of £13,000 after achieving Chartered status.
- Stronger organisational performance: businesses employing Chartered Managers see an average £62,000 boost in annual revenue.
- Contribution to the UK economy: each Chartered Manager adds an additional £22,400 per year to the national economy.
By combining enhanced leadership skills with recognised professional credibility, Chartered Managers are well-placed to thrive in the evolving world of work and lead organisations with confidence.

How do I become a Chartered Manager?
To become a Chartered Manager, you must go through one of CMI’s official assessment routes. The route you take depends on your current qualifications and level of management experience.
Route 1: CMI Fast Track
The Fast Track route (sometimes called the “Exemption Route”) offers an accelerated way to achieve Chartered Manager status by recognising your prior CMI qualifications.
If you already hold a recent CMI qualification, this route allows you to progress more quickly, building on the skills and knowledge you’ve already developed.
Eligibility requirements
To become a Chartered Manager via the fast-track route, you must have all of the following:
- A CMI Diploma, Extended Diploma, or Certificate at Level 5, 6, 7, or 8 in Management & Leadership, Leadership Coaching & Mentoring, or Strategic Sustainability Leadership (usually completed within the last 5 years).
- At least 3 years’ experience in a management role.
- Proven management skills and knowledge.
- Commitment to CMI Professional Standards and ongoing CPD.
Submission assessment
Your application will be based on a written submission that draws on your CMI qualification and practical management experience. This should demonstrate how you’ve applied your skills to deliver measurable results, your approach to ethical and professional practice, and your plans for future development as a leader.
The streamlined process reflects the knowledge you’ve already gained through your CMI studies, making it the quickest route to achieving Chartered Manager status.
Route 2: Full Assessment (Degree)
The Full Assessment route is designed for managers who either hold a relevant degree or have significant management experience but no formal qualification. It allows you to demonstrate your leadership capability and practical achievements through a structured assessment process.
Eligibility requirements
To apply via the Full Assessment route, you must have either:
- A degree-level qualification in management, business, or leadership plus at least 3 years’ experience in a managerial role.
- Or, if you do not hold a management-specific qualification, a minimum of 5 years’ senior or operational management experience.
- Proven management skills and knowledge.
- Commitment to CMI Professional Standards and ongoing CPD.
Submission assessment
Your application involves submitting a written portfolio that outlines your leadership journey, key achievements, and evidence of effective management performance.
Following this, you will take part in a professional discussion with a CMI assessor to review your submission in more depth.
This discussion allows you to demonstrate your practical application of leadership skills, ethical practice, and plans for future development.
Once the assessor is satisfied, your application is reviewed and, if successful, you are awarded Chartered Manager status.
Route 3: Experience only (Experiential route)
The Experience-Only route is ideal for managers who do not hold formal management qualifications but have significant leadership experience.
This route allows experienced professionals to demonstrate their practical management skills and achievements to gain Chartered Manager status.
Eligibility requirements
To apply via the Experience-Only route, you must have:
- A minimum of 5 years’ management experience at operational or senior management level.
- Evidence of impactful management practice within the last 18 months.
- Proven management skills and knowledge.
- Commitment to CMI Professional Standards and ongoing CPD.
Submission assessment
Your application requires a written portfolio showcasing your high-level performance, achievements, and leadership impact over the last 18 months.
Following this, you will participate in a professional discussion with a CMI Advisor-Assessor, either via telephone or online, to explore how you have applied your management skills, led change within your organisation, and developed professionally.
The assessor reviews both your written submission and discussion to determine if you meet the standards required for Chartered Manager status.
No matter your background or current qualifications, there is a route to Chartered Manager status
that suits your experience and career stage. Whether you progress through the Fast Track, demonstrate your skills via the Full Assessment, or showcase your practical expertise through the Experience-Only route, achieving Chartered status is a clear way to validate your leadership ability, enhance your credibility, and make a tangible impact within your organisation.
